Health and Social Care

Subject Overview:

Students have the opportunity to choose Health and Social Care for their short course option in year 9, then continue to study the BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care. When students start their Health and Social Care journey in Year 9, they will study a variety of key themes and topics that will provide a foundation of knowledge ready for Year 10. These topics include healthy balanced diet, factors affecting development and life-stages.

When students enter Year 10, they will start BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care. As part of this course, students will be given the opportunity to develop applied knowledge in areas such as the key characteristics of life-stages, how individuals can support through different life events, care values, factors that impact health and wellbeing, care plans and lifestyle choices.

Assessment Information – KS3

In year 9, students will complete at least one summative assessment per half-term. These will range in styles to equip the students with a variety of skills. Assessment methods include leaflets, presentations, extended writing and case study exam questions. These assessment methods give students the necessary skills and experience to help them produce effective responses to Pearson Set Assignments in KS4.

Assessment Information – KS4

Students will be assessed by internal Pearson Set Assignments (controlled assessment) and externally assessed written exams.

Components 1 and 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment that is designed to demonstrate student’s application of knowledge around human growth and development across life-stages, and the different types of health and social care services.

Component 3 is assessed through a 2-hour written exam worth 60 marks. This requires students to draw on theories, knowledge, and concepts from across the whole qualification.
