As a local resident of Tibshelf and an ex student of Tibshelf School, I became a Governor to help the school support and develop their pupils so that they are able to gain the best education possible and enjoy the years they spent at Tibshelf Community School.

I am married with 4 children, 2 of my children Charlie and Olivia currently attend Tibshelf Community School, and my two older children also attended the school.

I am actively involved in the Parish of Tibshelf as I am a member of Tibshelf Parish Council and Tibshelf Community Association which organises the annual Carnival and Fireworks Display. The School is a big part of the community and I am happy to be the link between both.

In my professional life I work in Human Resources as a Manager and in my spare time I enjoy socialising and spending time with family…. which is mostly spend being a taxi driver for football matches and swimming galas!!

I grew up in the neighbouring village of Pilsley and have lived in Tibshelf for nearly 20 years. I am a past pupil of Tibshelf School and I am proud to say that both my daughters currently attend the school.

As Vice Chair of Governors, in addition to attending Full Governors meetings, I also sit on the three other sub-committees: Strategy, Resources and Curriculum. I am also the Link Governor to the Science Faculty.

Up until a few years ago I was a full time English Teacher at Ashfield School but now I work there on a part time basis as an English Intervention Tutor. My other job is a complete contrast as I work from home restoring and selling antiques through my online business.

For me, being a governor is about doing all I can to ensure that both staff and students get every possile benefit from attending and working at Tibshelf Community School. Although it is sometimes a difficult role and some of the decisions can be tough, I do very much enjoy being a governor.

Elaine Belshaw

Parent Governor

Link Governor for Health and Safety

I grew up in Nottingham and moved to Newton 22 years ago. I have two sons; Matthew in Year 9 and Adam in Year 6 at Town End Junior School.

I see the role of Parent Governor as a privileged opportunity to make a positive contribution to the development of the school and support the students to achieve their potential. All children deserve the best start in life regardless of background or academic ability.

I am a Registered Nurse with 30 years experience in the NHS and currently work as Governance Matron at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Family life is important to me and treasuring time with my sons while they still want to know me is a priority! Hobbies include cooking, cake decorating, gardening and walking in the countryside.

I have lived in Blackwell for eleven years and moved to the area from Nottingham with my husband and then two small children to be closer to the country side. I work for a National Charity as a Volunteer and Training Manager. My job involves quite a bit of driving so as soon as I get the opportunity I am out walking the dog on the lovely trails in the area.

I have two sons, one in Year 10 and one coming up into Year 7 in September.

I am really looking forward to taking on a joint inclusion link governor role and hope to use the skills I have gained in my career path and personal life to support the school in my new position. I am enthusiastic with a committment to strive to continually improve anyhting I do so hope to put this into practice in this new role.

Justin Hawley

Co-opted Governor

Chair of Curriculum Committee

Link Governor to Maths

Both of my boys have benefited greatly from their education at Tibshelf – both academically and in self-esteem. They are now continuing their education away from home, exploring the world in every sense.

I believe passionately in the value of broad education, catering for the diverse needs and aspirations of children and young adults. Although our motivations for anything are usually complex, I think that it is this sense of the value of education that has motivated me to become a governor and use some of my ‘spare’ time for something worthwhile.

My professional background is in science/engineering, which hopefully complements the myriad of skills and experience in the wider governing body. In particular, I like analysis and understanding the root cause of problems.

My interests include walking, photography and DIY.

Kieran Newton

Staff Governor

Teacher of Mathematics at Tibshelf School

Louise Crowder

Member of Tibshelf School Senior Leadership Team

Pen Portrait

I have worked within education and the children and younger adults sector for 20 years both in a mainstream school, a grant maintained school and within the Local Authority.  As the School Business Leader for Tibshelf Community School, for the last 5 years, I am a strategic member of the school leadership team.

The school has undergone significant transformation in the last 5 years, including restructuring of senior and middle leadership roles as well as the support staff and teaching assistants.  My role in the transformation has been both strategic and operational to ensure the structures and systems that were in place enabled a smooth transition throughout this period of change and to develop the structures, personnel and culture to meet present and future needs.

I like to keep abreast of new innovations and technologies and one of my key passions is to identify genuine ‘school improvement opportunities’ and to bring others ‘on board’ by sharing ‘the vision’.

In recent years I have moved to a mentoring role for less experienced Business Managers in order to assist them to settle into their roles and I am now an active member of the DfE Leaders Forum and the North East Derbyshire Business Leaders Group.

I am a CIMA and CIPD graduate and I hold a Business Masters Degree.  I am a keen advocate of encouraging good practice, strong morals, continual CDP and robust performance management to raise standards throughout education. I have developed a wide network of contacts which allow me to access appropriate sources of information and support.  Acting as a Parent Governor for another Secondary School within the County also gives me a different perspective to the provision of education within a community.

I have an established and well qualified team which allow me to successfully fulfil my role as the School Business Lead.

Mark Ratcliffe

Parent Governor

Link Governor to Science & EBacc

Having served in the Royal Air Force for over 23 years I retired in Pilsley. Living in various cultures opened my eyes to the world we live in.

I am a strong believer in supporting your community and your child’s future.

My background is varied due to living in so many countries and doing so many different roles. I work part-time in a school environment and have served as a Governor at that school.

My daughter attends Tibshelf school of which I share an interest. My main interests are supporting Manchester City Football Club, volunteering for the RSPCA, Police Chaplain to the Derbyshire Police Constabulary.

One of my main passions is going on Battlefield Tours.

Headteacher of Tibshelf School

Pen Portrait

I have been Headteacher of Tibshelf Community School since September 2014 and it is a great privilege to lead such an excellent school, particularly one that is at the heart of its local community. Although I am originally from the other side of the Pennines, my wife and I have lived in Sheffield for many years. Our three children were all educated in our local schools and we all enjoyed the benefit of that local connection. Previously, I have worked in schools in Rotherham and Nottinghamshire as well as Sheffield. My spare time is dominated by the demands of local sport – particularly football and cricket – but sadly not much as an active participant these days.

Ruth Spencer

Chair of Resources Committee

Link Governor for Student Voice & Student Personal Development

Pen Portrait

My current contract of employment is with Derby University as a Therapist and Trainer, delivering 121 counselling sessions with students. As part of the Psycho-education Team I also deliver a variety of workshops around wellbeing.

My eldest son is currently in his second year of the Uniformed Services Course at Ashfield College and an ex-pupil of Tibshelf, during this time I served as a Parent Governor supporting Tibshelf through a variety of changes, the first of which was to move from the old site to the new.

My passion lies with ensuring our children are provided with the best opportunities, to be the best that they can be, but not forgetting the importance of a balanced curriculum which supports every child’s needs. My youngest son is currently a student which gives me insight into the day to day running of the school as a parent.

Previous voluntary roles have included working with Cruse Bereavement Care, Place2Be (Primary School Counselling Service), NSPCC – Primary School ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ program and most recently with Destination Imagination.  In my previous career I spent 16 years with Sainsburys in Management & HR.

Samantha Spyve

Parent Governor

Vice Chair of Curriculum Committee

Link Governor for Disadvantaged Students

I am a parent of two daughters who attend Tibshelf School.  I am a Deputy Head Teacher in a Derbyshire Primary School and am involved in the day to day running of the school, including safeguarding, assessment, performance management, Pupil Premium and Sports Premium planning and curriculum organisation.  I am also a staff governor at the school I work at.  In my spare time I go running.  It is a great way to de-stress, keep fit and have some time to myself. At Tibshelf I am a member of the Curriculum Committee and Link Governor for Creative Arts (PE, Art & Drama).

Kirstie Knight

Vice Chair of Resources Committee

Link Governor to Inclusion

As a past pupil myself I’m really pleased that both of my children now also attend Tibshelf Community School and I’m keen to support the school where I can. In the past I’ve volunteered as an infant and junior school governor and worked as a governor’s clerk so I had some idea of what was involved. I work as a solicitor and compliance officer in a local law firm so alongside carrying out advice work for clients my current role also involves drafting internal policies and procedures, data analysis and reporting and staff training.  I'm therefore hoping my background and experience will enable me to become a useful member of the school’s governing body and Resources Committee.
