Dance & BTEC Performing Arts (Dance)
Subject Overview:
At Tibshelf Community School, our Dance course offers Year 9 students an exciting opportunity to explore movement, creativity, and self-expression. This option is perfect for students who are passionate about dance or want to develop their physical abilities, confidence, and artistic flair. Through a combination of practical dance sessions and theory, students are introduced to various styles and techniques, including contemporary and jazz. They will also explore choreography, performance skills, and the creative process involved in putting together a dance piece.
The BTEC Performing Arts (Dance) course that we start in Y10 provides an in-depth study of dance and the performing arts industry. This vocational course allows students to expand their technical skills, explore different performance styles, and understand the business side of the performing arts world. With a focus on performance, choreography, and dance theory, the BTEC program offers students opportunities to work on real-world projects, preparing them for careers in dance, theatre, or further study in the performing arts.
Our Dance program encourages students to develop creativity, discipline, and resilience while building a strong foundation in teamwork and self-confidence. Whether students are new to dance or experienced performers, they will find a supportive environment to refine their skills and pursue their passion.
Assessment Information – KS3
In dance, students are assessed across three key performance strands:
- Accuracy – precision of skills
- Fluency – confident, consistent movement
- Control – effective body management and technique.
Students receive a Band 1–4 grade, helping them understand their current level and what progress looks like.
What the Bands Mean
- Band 1 – Emerging
Students show basic skills but with limited accuracy, control, or fluency. Sequences may be hesitant and lack flow. - Band 2 – Developing
Skills are becoming more consistent with some accuracy and control, though errors are still common. Movements show improving fluency and flow. - Band 3 – Secure
Skills are performed confidently with good accuracy, strong control, and smooth transitions. Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technique. - Band 4 – Advanced
Performance shows high precision, excellent control, fluent movement, and seamless flow. These qualities align strongly with KS4 expectations.
Assessment Information – KS4
If students decide to choose BTEC Dance as an option, they will have three assessments over the course of Year 10 and Year 11.
Components 1 and 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment. These assessments involve students writing a response to a brief in a controlled assessment. The method of assessment for these components range from written skill logs, rehearsal process and practical assessments.
Component 3 is an external assessment which builds directly on Components 1 and 2 and enables learning to be brought together and related to a real-life situation.
